The Bar Council is lobbying MPs over elements of the Criminal Justice Bill, which is currently being debated in the House of Commons
Briefing packs outlining the council's concerns have been sent to almost 400 MPs in the hope that they will challenge the bill during its passage through Parliament.
Bar Council chairman Matthias Kelly QC said that many backbench MPs shared the bar's concerns. He said: "Juries must remain a cornerstone of our justice system and plans to reveal previous convictions on a blanket basis will lead to a 'round-up the usual suspects' police culture.
"The abolition of the double jeopardy rule will result in sloppy investigations and the police being given a second bite of the cherry."
The bill is due before the House of Lords at the end of May.
