The Bar Council has launched the official Bar Directory on the Internet.

The web site is a joint venture with FT Law and Tax, the publisher of the Bar Directory, and it is accessed through the company's home page at http://www.ftlawandtax.com.

Bar Council chair Robert Owen QC said the Internet directory represented "another step forward in improving the accessibility of the Bar".

"Now potential Bar clients from all over the country will have access to up-to-date information about the wide-ranging expertise of the Bar," he added.

Managing director of FT Law and Tax, Chris Stibbs, said the site would keep the Bar in line with a technologically sophisticated legal industry.

"This latest step will go a long way to meet the changing needs of the legal community which now expects information in an instant," he said.

The Internet directory currently contains the same information as the printed version, but the Bar Council pointed out it can be continually updated.

A Bar Council spokesman said it was hoped the information provided by Internet directory would grow.

He said the Bar Council was also considering funding Internet access for bodies such as Citizens' Advice Bureaux.

The Bar Council has also launched its own web site, which can be found at http://barcouncil.org.uk and contains regularly updated information on Bar Council activities and members.
