Baker & McKenzie has appointed local lawyer Gunduz Karimov as managing partner of its Baku office – the first Azerbaijani to hold the role since the office was founded.

Karimov takes over from Daniel Matthews, who has headed the Baku office since it was set up in 1998. Matthews has relocated to Baker & McKenzie’s Istanbul office, a year after the Turkish office launched (27 October 2011).

Karimov first joined Bakers in 2002 and was made up in 2010. He focuses on litigation as well as competition and regulatory matters.

“The legal market continues to go through a period of turbulence which makes it an exciting time to run the office and take innovative approaches in serving our clients and their needs in the region,” said Karimov in a statement.

Azerbaijan’s oil resources have contributed to the country’s growth but work in the country is becoming more diverse (23 July 2012).

As well as Karimov, Baker & McKenzie’s Baku office is staffed by five associates and three paralegals.
