Baker & McKenzie has kickstarted a South African competition practice with the acquisition of local firm Vani Chetty Competition Law.
Name partner Vani Chetty joins Baker & McKenzie as a partner in Johannesburg, bringing with her her entire team.
The competition team adds to the firm’s existing South Africa capabilities in banking and finance, capital markets, corporate and M&A, projects and litigation.
The hire comes two years after Baker & McKenzie launched in South Africa through the hire of a team from defunct US firm Dewey & LeBoeuf (29 May 2012). In December 2012 the firm added to its offering in Johannesburg by bolting on litigation boutique Rudolph Bernstein & Associates (4 December 2012).
More recently Baker & McKenzie has been seeking to grow its Africa presence by developing a network of independent African firms (25 November 2013).
Chetty’s hire brings the number of partners in Johannesburg to 11, as part of a total staff complement of more than 75. Earlier this year two finance partners, Chris Moraitis and Astrid Berman, left Baker & McKenzie to rejoin former firm Werksmans (13 March 2014).
