Baker & McKenzie is expanding its WTO Practice Group by taking ICI's international trade manager.
EU commercial regulatory expert David Wakeford is joining the global law firm as of counsel to the London office after 37 years at ICI.
Ross Denton, managing partner of the European law centre London group, says he has worked on a number of cases with Wakeford, who was looking at his options in light of ICI's downsizing.
Wakeford is one of a growing number of non-lawyers to be recruited to a law firm to advise on WTO matters. He has a science background and an MBE for trade advice to the chemicals industry.
James Cameron, of counsel in the WTO group, says the appointment will improve the firm's understanding of clients' trade-related needs.
Denton says: "We are doing a number of cases for governments and we are getting more work."
Baker & McKenzie is advising the Korean government and the United Nations Committee of Trade and Development on a WTO dispute in Vietnam.
Denton says the firm has also been retained by several multinationals.
