Baker & McKenzie is to give free legal advice to the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), in return for being named as the orchestra's lawyer in its conference programmes.
The firm will provide English law advice on media, copyright, recording contracts and intellectual property issues for free, up to "a ballpark figure" based on the orchestra's average legal spend, said spokeswoman Corinna Christophorou.
She stressed that the firm was prepared to be flexible over the figure "with leeway on both sides" and that the LSO would not suddenly be charged above a certain figure. She added that the fit with the LSO was good, as the firm's niche areas were those needed by the orchestra.
The LSO previously used several other City firms for advice. It was introduced to the firm because the partner of one of Baker & McKenzie's senior associates works at the LSO.
Managing partner Nigel Carrington said: "We are not aware of any law firm doing a deal like this. We think it's very innovative."
