BAE Systems is creating the role of chief legal counsel for India as its business expands into new emerging markets.
The post will be filled internally “within a matter of weeks”, according to BAE general counsel Philip Bramwell.
“It’s a reflection of the fact that this business is internationalising,” he added. The chief counsel will have responsibility for selecting ;a ;group ;of international and domestic firms to work with BAE on Indian legal matters.
Bramwell’s three-year plan to revitalise BAE’s legal function kicked off last year with the appointment of corporate lawyer Mark Serfozo as chief counsel for compliance and regulation, while Andrew Guest moved overseas to become BAE’s first chief counsel for Saudi Arabia.
Bramwell said he was readying the third phase of his plan, which will be to benchmark the BAE legal team against the best in-house functions in the world.
