BAA’s new GC to shake up advisers

BAA is poised to carry out a review of its external legal advisers following the recent appointment of Carol Hui as the airport operator’s general counsel.

Hui said: “I’ll be reviewing BAA advisers. I’m new to the job and need to do whatever’s best for the business to ensure it has the advice that’s appropriate for the job, [represents] value for money and [which comes from firms with which I] can build good relationships.

“I don’t want too many disparate firms, [but that] doesn’t mean just one or two firms. A very large acquisition or disposal may require firms with that expertise, a smaller one won’t.”

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Herbert Smith are advising BAA on the proposed sale of Gatwick Airport.

BAA recently launched an open tender for a single firm to provide planning-related advice on Heathrow Airport’s proposed third runway, although should the Conservative Party become the next government, it is expected to block the project.
