Gone are the days when partners would end their career by quietly expiring at their desk in the same firm in which they trained. Tulkinghorn observes that these days partners are likely to try sitting at a variety of desks in different firms before settling.
A few of Tulkinghorn's scribes have noticed that partners have their own individual ways of referring to their former employers, but that they never ever do so by name.
Quite often it will be "my former firm" or "the old place", but one particular partner consistently calls his alma mater "the old firm", which makes him sound more like a former player at a Glasgow football club than a lawyer.
