The associate salary war is continuing to rage, with transatlantic giant DLA Piper being the latest firm to announce newly qualified (NQ) pay increases.
As first reported on www.thelawyer.com last Friday (22 June), London NQs are now on a salary of 63,000, a rise of 19 per cent on the 53,000 they received last year. There have been no changes to trainee salaries.
In the firm's Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield offices NQ salaries have nudged up a meagre 4 per cent from 35,000 to 36,500, while those for NQs in Edinburgh and Glasgow have risen by just 3 per cent, from 32,000 to 33,000.
The new salaries are significantly lower than those being paid by US firm Weil Gotshal & Manges, which recently announced that it is offering London NQs 90,000. However, US-based OMelveny & Myers has announced more modest increases, offering 78,000 to its London NQs. First and second-year trainees at OMelveny, meanwhile, have seen their salaries increase to 37,500 and 41,500 respectively.
DLA Pipers new NQ salaries are broadly in line with those paid by Addleshaw Goddard to City associates, which stand at 64,000. That said, DLA Piper falls short in the regions, with Addleshaws paying 40,000 to associates in its Manchester and Leeds offices.
Elsewhere, Denton Wilde Sapte NQs have seen their pay packets soar from 53,000 to 62,000. First-year trainees, meanwhile, have enjoyed a 20 per cent salary hike from 30,000 to 36,000. Olswang also pays its NQs 62,000 and first-year trainees 35,000.
