Ashursts adds second partner for Tokyo push

Ashurst Morris Crisp has taken on a second partner, Ken Kiyohara, to join its Japanese joint venture firm Ashurst Tokyo Law Office.

Kiyohara joins as a partner from Latham & Watkins, where he specialised in M&A and structured and leveraged finance.

Ashursts launched its joint venture in October last year and has continued to expand its practice in the region.

“Ken’s appointment is indicative of the continued development and expansion of the Japanese legal market,” said the managing partner of Ashursts’ Tokyo office John McClenahan.

Kiyohara is US and Japanese-qualified and has advised both local and international clients in the region.

The move comes after Latham hired corporate partner Satoshi Karashima last month from local firm Asahi Koma Law Offices – a sign, perhaps, that the very traditional Japanese market is opening up to further partner moves.
