Ashurst head of securities and structured finance (SSF) Erica Handling is leaving the firm to become general counsel (Emea) at Barclays Capital.
Handling, who has been at Ashurst since 2001, is one of the firm’s highest-profile partners. She hit the headlines at the start of the decade when she led a three-partner capital markets team from Weil Gotshal & Manges to the then Ashurst Morris Crisp.
In an internal memo seen by The Lawyer Ashurst senior partner Charlie Geffen confirmed Handling’s departure, adding that the firm would be “very sorry to lose” her.
“Over 10 years at the firm Erica has played a leading role in developing our finance practice and I want to thank her for her exceptional skill, dedication and effort,” Geffen added.
Handling’s clients include Cinven, Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse. She has also previously advised Barclays on structured finance deals.
Handling was closely associated with Ashurst’s decision to launch a structured finance-focused practice in the US and has been at the core of the firm’s strategy for several years.
It is understood that international finance partner Chris Georgiou will take over as the head of the SSF group.
