Women and corporate celebrate in Ashurst promotion round.
Ashurst’s promotions round sees corporate continue to be the most promoted practice despite the market downturn, with the group bagging six partners in this year’s round of appointments out of a total of 17.
The six partners being made up this year is a slight drop on the eight promotions to the department in 2007, when a total of 20 joined the partnership.
The finance group, which last year saw three promotions, was this year the second most-promoted team, with four new partners.
The energy, transport and infrastructure (ETI) and competition groups will both see two new partners, and the tax and employment groups one new partner each.
Senior partner Geoffrey Green said: "The promotions reflect our strategy of investing in key areas and geographies in order to deliver continued growth despite market volatility."
The promotions are split almost 50/50 between the firm’s City and overseas offices, with eight of the new partners in London, the other nine elsewhere.
The Paris office took three of the new partners, Frankfurt two, and the Brussels, Dubai, Madrid and Stockholm offices one each.
Six of the 17, or 35 per cent, of the promotions are of female lawyers, marking a significant increase on last year’s 20.7 per cent.
The figure also places the firm’s 2008-09 count higher than at any rival firm that has yet to be announced.
Herbert Smith, the top 20 firm which has promoted the second highest number of female partners so far, is close behind on 33 per cent.
