Ashurst NY chief returns to London

The head of Ashurst‘s New York office Giles Boothman is coming back to the UK after completing a three-year stint in the US.

Corporate and restructuring specialist Boothman has been responsible for Ashurst’s New York representative office on a part-time basis since 2004. He returns full-time to London on 1 October, from when the New York role will be filled by corporate and commercial partner Duncan Stiles.

Like Boothman, Stiles will spend on average one week a month in New York building and maintaining contacts among US firms and clients.

Stiles already has a track record for heading an Ashurst overseas office. In January 2001 he established the firm’s presence in Spain and was managing partner of the Madrid office until 2003.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of being out and about, building a reputation and continuing the work Giles has been doing in New York over the past three years,” said Stiles.

Stiles’ recent work includes acting for US private equity firm Lindsay Goldberg, aerospace, defence and electronics group Meggitt, and Kingston Communications. He said part of his remit would include strengthening Ashurst’s relationships with US corporates, although he admitted this would be difficult “as they’re wedded to US firms”.

Ashurst launched its New York office in 2000. Boothman’s appointment in 2004 ended a 12-month period during which the firm was without a US-dedicated partner after the 2003 retirement of the previous local head Alastair Macpherson.
