Ashurst NQ retention rate falls to 78% for spring 2012

Ashurst has reported a dip in its newly qualified (NQ) retention rates to 78% for its spring 2012 qualifiers.

The top 20 firm has announced it is keeping 21 of 27 trainees, giving it a retention rate of 78 per cent. However, three of the qualifying trainees decided to not apply for an NQ role at the firm.

The result is a drop from the retention rate at this point last year, when the firm achieved an impressive 95 per cent, holding onto 21 out of its 22 trainees.

Similarly, in autumn 2011 the firm posted a 93 per cent NQ figure, with 26 out of 28 trainees accepting positions at Ashurst.

The news follows magic circle firms Allen & Overy and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer revealing 89 per cent and 85 per cent retention respectively (24 January 2012).

SJ Berwin is the only top 20 law firm to post 100 per cent retention for Spring 2012 so far, keeping all eight of its trainee solicitors (18 January 2012).
