  • Hi there,

I am in a similar position to the comment two above mine. I didn't receive the best A levels due to extenuating circumstances and quite frankly, not working hard enough.

However, I have stepped up my game from my first year of uni, at not the best university, but I was wondering what are the general minimum points? And do these have to be made up by only 3 A levels? If I were to achieve a first, and a masters in law from a top university would my A levels hinder my chances of getting a training contract with a top London firm?

    Thank you in advance xx

  • Slightly different position to many responding here. I'm a 2nd year non-law student. I have good grades across the board (like most going for TCs) and go to a top 5 / top 10 uni. My problem isn't academics, but extra-curricular's / experience.

I have minimal extra-curricular activities to list, so am struggling to work out how to illustrate key competencies like leadership/initiative/teamwork (any tips at all???). I also have one lengthy internship at a top FTSE company but no legal experience. I'm hoping to get work experience for easter and summer before applying for winter vac schemes next year and hopefully then securing a TC. Does this sound like a good strategy? Will my extra curricular's let me down or will my academics make up for it? Does it sound like sufficient legal experience?

    Would hugely value any views.

  • I have just finished my degree at Imperial with an overall 2.1. I have 13 modules with 2.1 or 1. However, I have 7 modules with 2.2 and 3 modules with 3. I would like to have some opinion on my chance of securing a TC with a City firm, upon my academic results only.

  • Hi, I was wondering will I get a Vacation scheme or a 2-3 days insight event with a top law firm during my christmas vacation time? My A level grades are not so good but I am aiming for a 1st class, or 2:1 in my first year. However, I have work experience in another law firm.

Another problem which is disturbing me is that should I join any sports team such as Cricket or American Football because firms look for sports as in activities. I'm already a member of bar society and Mooting club.

  • This is a very insightful article indeed. i am currently in my first year of my LLB. I have a great interest in international company law however I am unaware as to which firms would be most suitable, how to contact these firms and also how marketable my experience in various countries may be given that I am British, have lived in Jamaica for many years and am also fluent in Norwegian with experience in Scandinavian countries. Is there anyone with any advice as to how I may market these attributes.

    It would be greatly appreciated

  • There are at least 3 comments above which suggest the people who authored them believe that this comment thread is some sort of application form for a law college/law firm. Where do people get this idea from?

  • Hi all,

I am in my 3rd (and penultimate year) of a history degree at Edinburgh university and have just gone through the vacation scheme process. I think a lot of the people commenting on here are getting too caught up in their Academic grades. I received A*A*A A at a level and I'm averaging a high 2.1 at university.

I have recently been offered two magic circle vacation schemes for this summer but also made the point of ringing up and asking for feedback. Both of the firms said that once I had reached the minimum standard of AAB and 2.1 average at university they stopped looking at academics.

They both repeatedly referred to extra curricular activities, which I had referenced as demonstrating the various attributes they were looking for, the wealth of past legal experience I had obtained in local high st environments, and life experiences.

Academics are not as important as everyone makes out. Sure you have to reach a minimum standard but that just gets the foot in the door. They want hard evidence of what makes you different.

I know this doesn't apply to all firms and I can only speak from my experience but in a career path where there is always going to be someone cleverer you need to explore other avenues of standing out.
