The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (Apil) has launched a campaign to raise awareness among women of the dangers lurking in hair dyes.
According to Apil president David Marshall, a particular ingredient found in many permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes known as PPD (paraphenylenediamine) can cause severe allergic reactions such as head swelling, burns and dermatitis. “Although serious adverse reactions to PPD are rare anyone using dyes containing this chemical should be aware of the risks,” said Marshall.
Apil member Alan Care of Tunbridge Wells firm Thomson Snell & Passmore, who has advised several clients in hair dye injury cases, called for clear warnings on boxes and more prominent advice on the instruction leaflets in dyes about the importance of sensitivity tests.
