Allen & Overy (A&O) has made up 18 lawyers to its partnership across 13 countries, with the vast majority joining from non-UK offices.
This is a fall from last year, when the firm made up a total of 20 to its partnership (1 May 2009). There are three females among this year’s round, accounting for 17 per cent of the total, a fall from 40 per cent last year.
The figure matches the number of promotions at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, which also made up 18 this year (29 March 2010).
A&O managing partner Wim Dejonghe (pictured) commented: “Over half of the firm’s turnover continues to be generated outside the UK and two-thirds of our work is cross-border, involving offices in two or more countries, so these promotions are a reflection of our continued commitment to strengthening our international network and investing in the future of the business.
“This is a significant milestone in any lawyer’s career. I’d like to congratulate all the new partners on their promotion.”
This comes as a number of firms have announced promotions to their respective partnerships including Addleshaw Goddard, which made up five, Olswang and Slaughter and May, which made up two apiece, and Wragge & Co, which promoted three (29 March 2010).
The new A&O partners come from the corporate, banking, ICM, litigation, tax and employment and benefits practices across A&O’s global network. They are:

Since the biggest int'l law firms will increasingly make most of their money outside London, lawyers in London wanting to be partners will need to be flexible about their location in the coming years. There are a number of examples of this above.
