Allen & Overy partner Michael Reynolds has been elected as the new president of the the International Bar Association (IBA).
Reynolds will take up a two-year term, succeeding Akira Kawamura of Japanese firm Anderson Mori & Tomotsune, who has been in the position for the last year.
Reynolds, an anti-trust lawyer, was the founding partner of the magic circle’s Brussels base, which opened in 1979. He is regarded as a world leader in competition law and has held a number of positions with the IBA, including vice-president, secretary general and chair of the legal practice division.
Reynolds said that as well as making climate change a priority the IBA would look to strengthen relationships with professionals in, among others, the Bric economies.
A task force will also be established to examine the impact of new technology on cross border conflicts. In a statement Reynolds said: “Cross-border transformations have perhaps been seen at their most radical in new technologies and social media. An IBA task force will explore the impact and potential of these for justice and the practice of law.”
Reynolds’ term as IBA president will conclude on 31 December 2014.
