Allen & Overy's (A&O) Amsterdam office has lured a partner from Trenité Van Doorne just weeks after the Dutch firm announced the demerger of its Amsterdam and Rotterdam offices to boost merger appeal (The Lawyer, 23 October).
Pieter Riemer will join A&O's corporate group as a partner on 1 January 2001, bringing the partner count to 36. He follows Sven Klos, who joined as intellectual property partner on 1 November from Nauta Dutilh.
Riemer joined Trenité in 1989 and set up the firm's small London office in 1996. He returned to Amsterdam this summer. "Joining A&O's Amsterdam office is the next logical step. After four years in the UK I want to continue my career in an international firm," he says.
He will take a number of clients with him, including internet incubator GorillaPark, which he has advised since its inception. He is currently working on its European roll-out.
With clients mainly in the IT sector, Riemer specialises in mergers and takeovers, private equity and venture capital. He says his departure is unrelated to Trenité's decision to split. "The atmosphere in the firm is upbeat," he says. "The split was the natural thing to do because of developments in the Dutch market. I believe the firm has a bright future."
Sietze Hepkema, senior partner of A&O Amsterdam, says: "Evidently, people are attracted by a combination of factors, such as how we conduct our practice, our client focus and our international success."
But he says that the firm is committed to developing homegrown lawyers. "Only a limited number of places are filled by these lateral hires. The focus of our partnership policy is still to cultivate our own associates in particular," he says.
