On the day that Linklaters confirmed Simon Davies as its new managing partner, The Lawyer revealed news of a slightly different addition to the management team at magic circle rival Allen & Overy (A&O).
A&O has appointed employment associate - yes, associate - Penny Caven to its management team.
While all and sundry have been cooing about how young Davies is (he's not even 40), Caven only qualified in 2000. Davies had been a partner for a whole year by then.
Since realising it had a dire retention problem, A&O has shown a flair for the public 'we love you' message. And in doing so, and by giving its junior lawyers experience of management, it may one day find its very own management prodigy.
