Confusion surrounds Allen & Overy's claim that it is poaching two senior tax specialists from Linklaters and big five accountants KPMG.
The law firm says accountancy partner and VAT specialist Peter Mendham is joining its practice at the beginning of next year, and senior tax associate Stephen Taylor is joining from Linklaters in November.
But Tony Davies, head of tax at KPMG in Bristol, says: "I am under the impression that Mendham will be staying here.
"I thought he was just doing technical support at Allen & Overy."
Michael McGowan, tax partner at Allen & Overy, says: "I am under the impression that Mendham is leaving KPMG. As far as we are concerned, he is coming to work for us. This is part of an expansion drive for our tax department, and we are looking to expand further."
