A modern-day version of the ‘plongeur’ in George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London.
What was your worst experience as a trainee?
Being asked by a client to leave my position as cloakroom minder at the opening of our offices to help carry a heavy filing cabinet through the driving rain, only to be shouted at on my return for having deserted my post.
Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?
I’m not sure I know anymore, although employment partners seem to find out about internal issues.
What time do you usually leave the office?
Usually between 6.30pm and 7pm.
What’s your favourite restaurant?
Chez Bruce on Wandsworth Common.
If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?
Unfulfilled. I’ve never felt I’m in the wrong job.
What’s your favourite film?
I like so many that I’d struggle to even come up with a favourite in each category.
What was the first record you ever bought?
David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
Who’s your hero and why?
Eric Cantona is probably the closest I have to a hero, for his artistry and aura.
What’s the best thing about your job?
I really like the people I work with.
What’s the toughest thing about your job?
Balancing responsibilities to clients, members of my team and the rest of the firm.
What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it?
It took me years to learn when to say no, but now I’m more organised.
What car do you drive?
An Alfa Romeo in the week and a people-mover at the weekends.
What book are you currently reading?
Imperium by Robert Harris.
What’s your favourite children’s book?
Whichever one I happen to be trying to interest one of my four sons in at the time.
What’s the most exciting deal/case you’ve worked on and why?
After all the press interest in the allegations involving Prince Harry, I was pleased that Sarah Forsyth won her unfair dismissal claim against Eton.
If you were stranded on a desert island what two luxury items would you take?
A mirror and a flare gun.
What’s the worst partner conference location you’ve attended and why?
They’ve all been good.
What’s the longest you’ve worked without sleep?
Through the night.
If a movie was being made about your life, which actor would play you and why?
Someone better looking than me.
Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with and why?
José Mourinho, but my answer may change if he ever gets his dream job.
