Former Linklaters managing partner Tony Angel has joined SJ Berwin as a non-executive director.
Angel was managing partner at the magic circle firm for two full terms from 1998 to 2007. During that time Linklaters doubled its profits and grew turnover by 57 per cent.
After leaving Linklaters, Angel joined ratings agency Standard & Poor’s as executive managing director and EMEA head. He is currently chief executive of healthcare technology group Vantage Diagnostics.
SJ Berwin senior partner Jonathan Blake said: “This is an important appointment for the firm. We’re delighted to have access to Tony’s hugely relevant experience and expertise, both within and beyond the legal profession, as we take SJ Berwin through its next phase of growth.”
Angel added: “I look forward to working with the partnership board in helping to deliver its exciting plans for SJ Berwin. The firm has made tremendous progress over the last 10 years and I look forward to being associated with its continued success.”
Earlier this year, SJ Berwin introduced five new members to the revamped partnership board, which replaced the strategy committee as the firm’s future planning hub (20 January 2011).
Much of last year was spent engaged in ultimately failed merger talks with US firm Proskauer Rose.
