Anderson Strathern prepares to re-enter top 100 with Bell & Scott takeover

Edinburgh-headquartered Anderson Strathern has taken over fellow Scottish property player Bell & Scott, giving it a sporting chance of re-entering the UK 100 this year.

The two firms have a combined turnover of £23m, meaning Anderson Strathern would rank at the bottom end of the UK 100 turnover table based on 2009-10 figures. The last time the firm made it into the top 100 was 2007-08, when it ranked at number 97.

Anderson Strathern chairman Robert Carr said the main reason for the tie-up was to consolidate the firm’s position in the Scottish property market.

In a statement he said: “Our primary objective is to bring the clients of the combined practice a broader range of specialisms and opportunities.

“Our move places Anderson Strathern very firmly at the centre of the Scottish property market which remains a core element of our economy.”

Bell & Scott managing partner Paul Jennings said his firm’s clients would benefit from the deal because it would allow them to access a broader range of services, including environmental law, licensing, planning, private client, renewables and tax.

Under the terms of the arrangement Bell & Scott’s Edinburgh team will move into Anderson Strathern’s offices in Rutland Court, while in Glasgow the Anderson Strathern team will move into Bell & Scott’s George Square base.

The combined firm has a total of 57 partners, 16 of whom are part of the commercial real estate practice.
