  • Why on earth would Wragges want to saddle themselves with this? They have done so well over the last 10 years that they can surely do better than picking up a medioka firm on a downward trajectory.

  • Can Wragges offload their London property and move into Lawrence Graham's then? That would appear to be the most sensible option. How much do Wragges have in London?

  • Wragges has done well in the past 10 years but does seem to have lost its way of late. LG is in a downward spiral and needs rescuing - it's probably past the worst now that it has sub-let space in its offices. This could be a very canny move by Wragges at the right point in the LG life cycle - pick up a credible London practice on the cheap and build from there. Very interesting....

  • Agree with 3.07, prestigious but under performing London practice picked up on the cheap will give Wragges the London exposure they need to propel them up the top 100 and give themselves more high profile work. One hopes some marketing wizzkid can come up with a better name than LG Wragges/Wragges LG/WLG/LGW. Also what mid-tier firm thinks it is a good idea to rent property at the height of the market in GBP70 per square foot office space.

  • Re Law Hamster, the same was said about the LG/FFW discussions but the Partners still rejected it without even going to a vote. And now LG have sublet the space that would have created the financial premium in that deal

  • The potential tie up does make commercial sense. There is synergy between the firms practice areas and
    LG are coming out of the financial property gloom commitments whilst W&Co are on a work and financial resurgence.
    The joined up firm could leverage themselves into the UK Top 20ish within a few years.
    The question is, of course, if the partnerships can look beyond their own navels and overcome their fear.
    To do so would require open minds from the majority of the Partners of both firms and some foreward thinking and willingness to 'Make it so'...A little like the Crabtree & Poole era at Wragges in the 90's.
    Without such a willingness to grasp the opportunities and make a go of it, then both may well languish.
    I would trust that it becomes a 'Yes' and wish them well.

  • Makes a lot of sense. Both firms gain economies of scale. Both gain greater resources for international expansion. Wragges gains a scale presence in London it would struggle to build organically. LG gains a presence outside London becoming more balanced and also able to utilise Wragges lower cost base for some work.

    The fact that LG is not magic/silver circle does not mean this is not a good merger for both firms and is in fact irrelevant. The only thing to judge is whether this transaction creates a stronger firm. And it does.

  • I understand that LG and W&C discussed a potential merger a number of years ago and those talks collapsed. It is perhaps a sign of desperation that the failed talks have recommenced as I query what has changed in the legal landscape? A merged unit would create a strong Birmingham outfit with an underperforming London branch - the international offices of both firms do not generate significant fees. I therefore wonder what real benefit there is for W&C merging with LG?
