Personal injury specialist Neil Hudgell Solicitors has opened a London office, having purchased collapsed litigation boutique Harris Cartier’s book of personal injury work.
The new Chancery Lane office will house a team of ten former Harris Cartier staff, led by catastrophic injury specialist Kent Pattinson who has also joined the firm’s management board.
The team includes Pattinson’s fellow Harris Cartier directors Chris Gooderidge and Karen McCarthy, a further five lawyers and two support staff.
Neil Hudgell Solicitors managing director Neil Hudgell said: “The type of cases we’re acquiring and the skills and knowledge of the new additions to our legal team fit with our increasing focus on complex, high value personal injury and medical negligence cases”.
Hudgell said he is hoping to grow the London office by a further 10 people with two further acquisitions in the South-East. “Both are reasonably well resourced commercial entities that have decided to move out of the PI sector and go in a different direction,” he said.
Since 2011, Hull-headquartered Neil Hudgell Solicitors has completed 20 other deals totalling £4m, including the purchase of four legal practices.
Hudgell did not rule out opening offices in other major cities but said the immediate priority is establishing the London office with a heavy weight marketing campaign scheduled for the New Year.
He said further propositions for expansion would only be pursued if they made economic sense, adding: “London made economic sense because of the business generated via our internet investment over the past few years and because of the Harris Cartier opportunity.”
Hudgell said the business had grown by approximately 30 per cent though online investment, with about 25 per cent of that income coming from London.
Neil Hudgell Solicitors is a limited company with Hudgell the sole director. There is a management board consisting of the firm’s most senior lawyers including four in Hull, three in Leeds and now Pattinson in London.
Harris Cartier filed for administration on 14 October after being unable to pay its professional indemnity cover on 1 October. It was then sold to two buyers, Mayfair firm Gordon Dadds and Neil Hudgell Solicitors (14 October 2013).
