Mishcon de Reya has held its first-ever management elections for both the managing partner and heads of department positions.
Current managing partner Kevin Gold has been re-elected to serve a three-year term while the heads of the corporate and dispute resolution groups, Nick Davis and Kas Nouroozi respectively, have been re-elected to their roles.
All three partners stood unopposed, with the result that no votes were cast in the firm’s first-ever elections. However, Gold said that the fact of holding elections was a marker of the firm’s growth.
“We’re experiencing a sustained period of growth, and this can come with its own responsibilities and challenges, notably, how to maintain this success and ensure that we don’t grow complacent,” said Gold. “In my experience, the best time to review your processes is when things are going well, and it is with this in mind that we decided to introduce an election process for the managing partner and head of department roles.”
In doing so, Gold said that not only would Mishcon ensure that its management was kept fresh, but also that the firm would enhance its accountability. It would, he said, also help further professionalise the firm to keep pace with its growth.
“Our partners are trustees for all members of the firm, and therefore have a right to their say over its running,” added Gold.
From now on Mishcon partners will get the chance to vote for two of its current six heads of department every two years. The managing partner position will be voted on every three years.
Mishcon’s other groups and group heads are: Sandra Davis (family); James Libson (private, also the firm’s executive partner); Nick Doffman (real estate); and Joanna Blackburn (employment).
It has not yet been decided which two of these groups will be the pair to be next up for re-election in 2015.
