Clifford Chance managing partner Matthew Layton has appointed a new-look executive leadership group to replace its management committee following a dramatic overhaul earlier this month.
The firm rewrote its constitution after a vote last week to replace its practice group and regional heads by appointment rather than via elections. Clifford Chance also voted to establish a new slimmed-down leadership committee with global business units instead of practice areas (25 July 2014).
All of the leadership roles on the committee were potentially up for renewal as part of the process regardless of the stage of their term (24 July 2014).
Current finance head Mark Campbell will now step down five months early to be replaced by finance partner Robert Lee. Lee takes up the new role as head of a global financial markets unit. He will also be the first-ever appointed finance head.
Capital markets head David Dunnigan, who previously sat on the committee is also stepping down five months early and will be replaced by new capital markets head Adrian Cartwright.
As a practice group leader, Cartwright will not have a seat on the committee. Global real estate head Alfonso Benavides and tax, pensions and employment head Chris Davies will also step down from the group.
Germany head Andreas Dietzel will end his term one month early and will be replaced by new appointed Germany managing partner Peter Dieners.
The firm has also created a new Continental Europe role for the group, with Paris head and one-time firm-wide managing partner contender Yves Wehrli in that role (18 March 2013).
It leaves the new group with 11 roles split among the three new global business units (GBUs), four regional managing partner spots and five executive positions as well as the managing partner.
The other two GBUs consist of a global M&A and corporate transactions/advisory group and a risk management and disputes group. New global corporate head Guy Norman will sit at the top of the M&A group.
Current head of litigation Jeremy Sandelson will take up the reins as head of the new global risk management, litigation and dispute resolution team. He was re-elected to his role in October 2013 and sat on the management
Current Asia Pacific head Peter Charlton will continue in his role on the group as well as Americas head Evan Cohen. Wehrli also sat on the committee previously having been elected in 2010.
Layton took up his role on 1 May 2014 (27 November 2013).
