Addleshaw Goddard is rolling out a new legal process-mapping initiative across more than 40 of its primary transactions in an attempt to provide cheaper and more efficient services to clients.
The new service delivery method, which the firm claims is an industry first, is being led by partner Andrew Chamberlain.
Addleshaws’ former employment group head Chamberlain, who recently took up the newly created role of head of client delivery, said the firm had process mapped 46 of the most common types of contentious and non-contentious legal work in what amounts to one of the biggest change programmes in the UK legal market.
“The starting point was that the legal market is broken, clients aren’t happy and haven’t been for years and they want greater certainty and innovation around pricing,” said Chamberlain. “The economic crash was the final piece of the jigsaw to make a perfect storm.”
Eighteen months ago as part of Addleshaws’ broader response to the challenges in the market, Chamberlain said, the firm began looking at to how to re-engineer its service delivery model.
One of its first attempts to respond to client demand for more innovative and better-value services came when it launched a bespoke and centralised in-house support team staffed with paralegals. Chamberlain said that this Manchester-based Transaction Services Team (TST) had now grown to a staff of 75 handling stand-alone legal process work such as document review.
“That showed the need and so we began process mapping across the entire business,” added Chamberlain. “We’ve now mapped 46 legal processes across the core groups such as banking, corporate, litigation and real estate. The idea is to provide much better clarity and certainty of approach and, to the client, certainty of cost.”
Earlier this year Addleshaws also recruited LPO specialist Andy Loach as chief operating officer of its (TST). Loach has held senior leadership roles in a range of well-known international businesses including Xchanging Group, CPA Global where he was vice president (outsourcing), and chief marketing officer at Integreon.
Loach was most recently part of the senior management team of the Managed Legal Services Division at Berwin Leighton Paisner.
Addleshaws is targeting the delivery at least 10 per cent of its work though the centralised TST by 2015.
