  • I love all the points you make about lawyers here in this article. I have been in the legal business since 1987. I made my way from Word Processor to Paralegal to Help Desk analyst to Legal Technical Trainer. I've met many, many high powered lawyers surrounded in the environment you speak of. Yet, with all that, they lack the very skills you mention. I hope some of the out of work attorneys will get this message and slay those men in ivory towers.

  • Found your article very uplifting as I left the traditional roles in private practice and local government for freelance work for personal needs and it has meant I have been locked out of getting back in and without doing contract work and applying the very skills you talk about I would have stopped being a lawyer. Getting to an ivory tower is about internal company politics more than just being a good lawyer and so as much as I agree with what you say I wish I knew how to be the face that fits. It is an art and skill in itself that that people like me have not learnt as I am too busy trying to be a good lawyer. It takes more to reach the top in one's field whatever that may be, law, medicine, engineering.

  • I aspire to someday become a lawyer myself, and thus found this article very insightful. In my opinion, listening is a skill and a virtue that people often undervalue, not taking into account the actual importance of it. Because how can you possibly ope for the best outcome for your case, if you cannot properly attend to all the feelings, thoughts and ideas shared by your client?

  • I agree that it is important to be a good listener.However it is equally important to be able to curtail the client once you have obtained all relevant information.

  • I like what you have said here. I have been a lawyer for a little less than 20 years. I believe an important part of ones ability to build a successful practice is his/her realization that he/she (as a lawyer) is not the center of the universe, that their skills are generally only tool to grease the wheel. Considerations other than the existence of the lawyer generally drive the resolution of the matter at hand, and a lawyer's skill are simply instruments that assist in getting clients to where he/she desire to go.

  • I agree too, it's very importance to listen as to comprehend and portrait what the clients desires but that is not enough to result in success if the information is used in a passive way. I think however is your listening if you really want to help you will find a way to do so. The listening part as to be able to be in one's shoes under the raincoat of a law knowledge ah there is where you got to be... thinking "what are you going to do about being there and act at the front of the resolution not yet another ear is not enough. Clients want results and if they come to see you its because they don't know how to get them. So apart from the listening the type of determination and commitment you can put in is what the client really expect I think.
