Some firms performed exceptionally well in several categories – how clever are they
Not everyone can be a winner, but some of the runners-up at this year’s The Lawyer Awards exhibited top expertise in multiple categories.
Lawrence Graham (LG) came third in both Regulatory Team of the Year and M&A Team of the Year, mixing it up with bigger City players in the latter category with its instruction on Thai group PTTEP’s £1.22bn takeover of AIM-listed Cove Energy.
LG’s involvement on this deal stood out for its presence as a smaller firm capable of handling a major global M&A transaction under close media scrutiny and with several zeros in the deal value.
Other multiple runners-up include just-merged Norton Rose Fulbright, second in M&A Team of the Year and third in the Finance Team of the Year category. Legacy Norton Rose is a previous Law Firm of the Year winner and this year’s placings show that it continues to perform at the highest level in several areas.
A nod should also go to Pinsent Masons, which placed second in the Private Wealth Team of the Year category and third in Litigation Team of the Year. The firm’s private wealth practice may not have the profile of some of the other shortlisted firms, which are arguably more focused on this area, but the focus on ‘new money’ is paying off – and Pinsents’ innovation was also on view in its litigation entry, which involved cutting-edge e-disclosure techniques.
Showing excellence in one field is great, but being top-notch in several is worthy of particular note.
