India’s largest firm Amarchand Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co has dipped into the Irish legal market to hire one of the republic’s leading competition specialists.
A&L Goodbody EU and competition associate Paku Khan will join Amarchand as director of competition law next January.
He will be working with the firm’s competition head Pallavi Shroff. Khan, who was born in the US to Indian parents, moved to Ireland in 2002 to work for the Competition Authority. While there he was involved in cases concerning Microsoft, Ryanair and AerLingus. His move to India is in response to a significantly increased demand for competition advice on the subcontinent.
This is the result of a gearing up of the powers vested to India’s Competition Commission earlier this year and the anticipation of the introduction of a merger control authority next January. “ I’m very f la ttered Amarchand chose me,” said Khan. “India’s a relatively greenfield competition regime and the opportunities are mindboggling.”
