With Christmas just around the corner, we asked a host of law firm chiefs what they were hoping for this year.
Here’s what they told us:

Lee Ranson
Lee Ranson, managing partner at Eversheds: “Three points for Nottingham Forest against Leeds on Boxing Day would be good. If that’s too big a stretch for the big man then tickets for the Book of Mormon, which opens in the West End in February.”
Ian Gilbert, managing partner at Walker Morris: “Peace and quiet.”

Sharon White
Sharon White, chief executive at Stephenson Harwood: “For our clients to be the successful bidders on a number of projects and transactions that are pending - that would get the new year off to a great start. And something small but very sparkly under the tree from my husband.”
Ted Burke, chief executive at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer: “In addition to more time with the family, a box of inexpensive and durable reading glasses as I break and lose so many of them while travelling.”
Stuart Fuller, global chair at King & Wood Mallesons: “A teleporter so I don’t have to spend my life on planes.”

Simon Beswick
Simon Beswick, managing partner at Osborne Clarke: “If I was allowed to be greedy it would be seeking two presents: increased business confidence and another quality striker for Liverpool FC, both for the obvious reasons.”
Iain Blatherwick, managing and senior partner at Browne Jacobson: “The Complete Columbia Johnny Cash Collection and for Norwich City’s unbeaten run to continue.”
Philip Rodney, chairman at Burness Paull & Williamsons: “For 2013, I would like the pundits proved wrong and healthy growth in the economy. I would also like Led Zeppelin to reform for one last hurrah and to see Patti Plinko playing the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.”
Alberto Saravalle, managing partner at Bonelli Erede Pappalardo: “After 13 months of austerity and new taxes, a jolt to Italy’s economy allowing it to move rapidly on the path towards growth. This should give foreign investors new confidence in Italy’s ability to overcome its structural problems and attract again foreign investments.”

Nigel Knowles
Nigel Knowles, CEO and managing partner at DLA Piper: “The restoration of trust and confidence between the public and private sectors unleashing a true entrepreneurial spirit to kick start our economy and to get young people into work. And seeing Sheffield Wednesday head the Championship, GDP growth of 4 per cent and a golf lesson from Rory McIlroy.”
Colin Passmore, senior partner at Simmons & Simmons: “I’ve asked for two tickets to see Neil Young in concert. He’s playing in London next year and I’m a really big fan of his but have never seen him live. I’ve also asked for the Michael Macintyre DVD. I saw him in October and he was awesome.”
Florentin Tuca, managing partner at Tuca Zbarcea & Asociatii: “All I wish for Christmas is to take a picture of my daughter when she will meet Roger Federer while staying at the same hotel as us in Dubai.”
Javier Samaniego, managing partner of Bird & Bird’s Madrid office: “I ask the Eastern Wise Men to bring in 2013 some good fees, deals and ‘birds’.”

Jennie Gubbins
Jennie Gubbins, senior partner-elect at Trowers & Hamlins: “It has to be quality time with my family, a bit less rain and maybe even a spot of snow for all round festive cheer.”
Darryl McDonough, chief executive at Clayton Utz: “I’d like to enjoy time with family and friends, catch up on my reading and get some sleep in somewhere other than a plane. And perhaps a new pen for my collection.”
Emmanuelle Barbara, managing partner at August & Debouzy: “Trust within France and more specifically between the government, the corporations and the citizens of our country, in order to act together towards recovery from the economic crisis and economic growth which would benefit to all.”
Paul Wilson, CEO at Shakespeares: “If Santa can help, my staff’s ongoing patience as we continue to try to make sense of the future of the regional UK legal market and the implications for their long-term careers”
Danny Gowan, international senior partner at DAC Beachcroft: “A bright and prosperous new year.”

Does it tell you something about the state of the legal profession that not one of these supposedly top-end, innovative business brains has anything even remotely original or insightful (let alone amusing) to say?

Wishing for the economy to improve for Xmas so that you can earn more cash to buy all the presents you really want kind of defeats the object.

I'd like some chips - good fat golden hot ones with salt and vinegar - and I'd like to eat them with my wife by the seaside. And some scallops in polystyrene tubs, please.
