CMS’ international network has expanded into Albania after its Italian outlet, CMS Adonnino Ascoli & Cavasola Scamoni, snared a nine-lawyer team from Eversheds Bianchini.
The entire Tirana office of Eversheds’ Italian alliance firm will transfer to CMS, with the deal expected to be completed in the next few days.
The group is led by the office’s managing partner Marco Lacaita, alongside senior associate Mirko Daidone. Seven other lawyers and two support staff have also been included in the move.
CMS Adonnino Ascoli & Cavasola Scamoni managing partner Pietro Cavasola said in a statement: “This is an exciting acquisition for us, as the relations between Italy and Albania are strong. We believe this acquisition will create work within the Balkan region since many Italian companies are interested in investing in this area, and we’ll also be able to further develop the business together with the other CMS firms.”
Lacaita added that he expected the office’s existing clients to stay with the firm following the transfer.
The move leaves the Italian-Albanian branch of CMS with 19 partners and more than 60 associates.
The news follows the opening of a Luxembourg office by Belgian arm CMS DeBacker at the turn of the year (14 December 2010). The firm opened a six-lawyer office, including two partners.
In a statement, Eversheds said: “Eversheds Bianchini and Eversheds International took the decision at the end of 2010 to close its small office in Albania because of differences in strategic approach. After some discussions, rather than close the operation, it was transferred to local partner Marco Lacaita. We wish him all the best for the future.”
