Akin Gump, the seventh largest law firm in the US, has signed an alliance with Foster Pepper & Shefelman.
Foster Pepper, a 132-lawyer firm based in Alaska, Oregon and Washington, has linked with 900-lawyer Akin Gump to increase its international reach.
The move gives Akin Gump a north-west presence in the US to add to its offices in Brussels, London, Moscow, Riyadh and other parts of the US.
Bruce McLean, chairman at Akin Gump, says: "Foster Pepper is one of the north west's finest firms and has a great team of practitioners. Our clients located in the Pacific Northwest will greatly benefit from the expanded resources that this alliance will provide."
Jack Cullen, chairman of Foster Pepper's executive committee, says the firm has decided on an alliance rather than a merger to maintain its own identity.
"The alliance allows Foster Pepper to continually address the growing needs of our clients both nationally and internationally with one of the most prestigious law firms in the country.
We will remain a strong regional firm but now we have an international reach with lawyers we know and respect."
