Washington DC firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld is poaching two top corporate partners from New York rival Brown & Wood.
Jaemin Park and Jay Gordon Cohen specialise in representing Korean clients and will join Akin Gump's Korea practice group. The group already represents a number of large corporations in the country - including Samsung Electronics and Hyundai.
Park and Gordon act for Korean governmental and financial institutions, real estate developers and international investment banks with Korean assets.
Park says that she is moving firms because she feels that her clients will be better served by Akin Gump's greater resources. The firm has 900 lawyers worldwide compared to nearly 400 at Brown & Wood.
She says: "The depth and breadth of Akin Gump's global resources are tremendously appealing, and provide the level of support our clients require.
"Akin Gump's capabilities in litigation, trade and taxation will really complement our practice, and our strong relationship with Korea Asset Management Corporation, combined with Akin Gump's strong relationships with other government agencies, will really benefit our clients."
Akin Gump's Korean practice is headed by Sukhan Kim, one of the leading authorities on US-Korea trade issues.
Kim advises the government of the Republic of Korea on international economic policy issues affecting economic and trade relations between Korea and the US.
Akin Gump's chairman Bruce McLean says that the addition of Park and Cohen adds to the firm's already strong practice.
He says: "Their broad-based Korean corporate and restructuring practice is an excellent fit with our already robust Korean practice, and will offer our clients tremendous specialised resources."
McLean says that the firm also acts for other heavyweight Korean clients including Pohang Iron & Steel Company and Inchon Iron & Steel.
Akin Gump has European offices in Brussels and London, eight offices in the US, one in Moscow and an affiliate in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.
