Akin energy ace plumps for Orrick

San Francisco firm Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe is bulking up its Washington DC energy practice with the hire of a partner from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld.

Merrill Kramer is currently chair of Akin Gump’s electric utility practice and joins Orrick’s global energy, communications and infrastructure practice group.
Recent deals include: adv-ising the management group in the $500m (£350.6m) sale of Merrill Lynch & Co’s global energy group to Allegheny Energy; acting as lead regulatory counsel in the $8bn (£5.5bn) CalEnergy-MidAm-erican Energy Company merger; and representing Dynegy in the $255m (£178.8m) sale of 11 cogeneration products to El Paso. As well as being a transactional lawyer, he also has regulatory experience from working with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
He said he is moving to Orrick because it allows him to draw on the firm’s corporate and finance practices, which are increasingly being called for in the energy market.
Orrick’s global energy group now includes more than 50 lawyers in seven US cities and the London, Singapore and Tokyo offices.
