Several City law firms have joined forces with a new charity to help A-level students get a kick-start in a professional career.

Addleshaw Goddard, Berwin Leighton Paisner and Herbert Smith have all signed on with The Linkson Fellowship to take a summer intern for 2006.

The Linkson Fellowship aims to assist bright students from low-income families and underprivileged backgrounds to obtain internships with professional service organisations, including law firms.

The charity is also working with universities to find ways to identify these youngsters during the university admissions process.

The participating firms will each take one student for a two-week internship. If successful, the summer intake for the scheme will be widened to up to three students in 2007.

A spokesman for Addleshaws said: “Making available this opportunity will not only allow the young person to get an insight into a career they might not have had information about, but also provide them with an experience that they can trade on to get into a good university and future employment.”

The charity has identified 85 candidates from the London Borough of Redbridge predicted to attain at least one ‘A’ and two ‘Bs’ at A-level.
