It seems to me that Acculaw is making the most of their plight and has produced a business model (and offered a trainee salary) based on that demand. I hope I am wrong. There is potential for this to be a useful, affordable and positive tool for many small and medium sized firms that would not otherwise have the means to afford or accommodate a trainee or two. A lot of people are as cynical as I am though, judging from the (mostly negative) coverage in the press. Maybe the people who are steering Acculaw will take the opportunity to maximise the potential of the model and offer trainees to charities, law centres and struggling legal aid firms without charge? That sounds like a win win situation for all concerned. There is a chance that the Acculaw model will revolutionise training in the mid-tier playing field and create much needed training contracts. It’s just a pity that the SRA or the Law Society didn’t think of it first – a middle man without an eye on the bottom line must surely be better? The trainee gets the chance to sample life in a variety of firms and inside organisations across different sectors.
