ABA's Ramo awarded for achievements

Roberta Cooper Ramo, the immediate past president of the ABA and partner at New Mexico firm Modrall Sperling Roehl Harris & Sisk, is to receive an award in recognition of her contribution to helping women in the profession.

The special award, given by the ABA Commission on women in the profession, is part of the annual Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement award scheme, which is designed to recognise the professional achievements of women lawyers in the US.

Winners must also have actively paved the way for other women in the profession.

Five awards are presented each year, as well as occasional special awards, such as Cooper Ramo's, for women who have shown a lifetime commitment to women in the profession.

They will be presented at the ABA's annual conference at the end of the month.

This year's other winners are: Evelyn Gandy, former lieutenant governor of Mississippi and of counsel at Mississippi firm Ingram & Associates; Jamie Gorelick, former deputy attorney general of the US; Antonia Hernandez, president and general counsel at the Mexican American legal defence and educational fund, Los Angeles; Justice Joan Dempsey Klein of the California Court of Appeals and the national Association of Women Judges; and Drucilla Stender Ramey, executive director and general counsel at the Bar Association of San Francisco.
