A passage to India

It takes a little bit of imagination to picture Slaughter and May’s highly paid partners working alongside a legal outsourcing unit in India.

But that’s exactly what looks set to happen, thanks to the insistence of a single cost-conscious client (see story).

Okay, so Slaughters insists the project is a one off and that it’s not planning a major change to its business model. It won’t be packing all the associates off to a Mumbai call centre just yet.

But it is a sign that no firm, no matter what its reputation, is immune from the revolution sweeping the legal sector. And if Slaughters can offer this to one client, why not more? Why not all?

Well, for starters, The Lawyer knows of at least one legal outsourcing company sent packing by the Slaughters management when it pitched its services recently. It wasn’t so much of a “no thank you” as an “over my dead body”, so at the very least the current outsourcing is an uncharacteristic volte-face by the elite City firm.

When it comes to keeping clients happy in a recession, clearly anything goes.
