9 Bedford Row lures barrister trio as silk defects to No5

David Williams QC of 9 Bedford Row (9BR) has been poached by No5 Chambers, while 9BR has taken on a trio of barristers, including Joanna Korner QC of 6 King's Bench Walk.

Korner, who was called to the bar in 1974 and who took silk in 1993, has joined 9BR in the same month as John King and Anne Faul, both from Lamb Building.

All the silks and juniors at both sets specialise in crime, indicating that the criminal bar is set for mass movement between sets as barristers jostle for position under the new legal aid regime.

Michael Eves, 9BR senior clerk, said the triple hire takes the set's membership up to 60. "We're always looking to strengthen, and with the addition of these three members we've certainly done that, especially with Joanna Korner in the area of international law," said Eves.

Of Williams' appointment, No5 head of chambers Ralph Lewis QC said the silk adds capabilities to the set's criminal practice both in Birmingham and London.

"David's been an associate tenant here for 12 months and his decision to practise full time from No5 is very gratifying indeed, particularly at a time when we're looking to expand our senior strength," he said.
