Two Manchester chambers are in merger talks which if successful would create a 91-strong set, dwarfing local rivals.
Tony Morrissey, a clerk at 9 St John Street, said that his set is in the early stages of talks with Oliver Goldstone QC's 28 St John Street. "There have been conversations between the two chambers of which I have been told about by my management committee," he said. "However, nothing concrete has happened. One reason for merging is the fact that we have similar practices." Both sets specialise in personal injury, criminal and family law, although 9 St John, which has 46 tenants, also does commercial, employment and property work. 9 St John also has an association with the 10-strong Liverpool chambers 42 Castle Street.
