After serving nearly 12 months notice, Chris Owen, 7 Bedford Row's highly respected senior clerk, is finally leaving chambers.
From the end of October, Owen will be able to embark on his new career as a consultant to the legal profession. Owen's notice period has been so drawn out because of the difficulty the chambers has had in finding a suitable replacement. Head of chambers David Farrar QC told The Lawyer in January that he hoped to appoint someone in just two months; in fact, the search has now taken more than eight months. It is understood that a replacement - believed to be from outside the legal profession - has now been recruited. As of 1 September, Owen will take up his first contract, working two days a week and returning to 7 Bedford Row for the remaining three days. Clerk Perry Allen, responsible for the civil and family team at the set, has also left. He joined 2 Gray's Inn Square a fortnight ago.
