  • It is like the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. All of the big hitters are rushing for the door taking their clients with them. Anywhere else everyone would be getting seriously worried about their futures, but in this "wonderland" they merely send out ludicrous press releases congratulating themselves!

  • Counter-productive and badly done. 6 months notice or even a year would be sufficient to keep Mr Ustaran's clients with the firm. 18 months is crazy

  • FFW is heading in ever decreasing circles. In years to come FFW will be a leading case study in how not to manage a law firm. The head hunters must be all over them, although before long there won't be many decent pickings left. Ustaran is a major loss and FFW senior management (a real misnomer) is delusional and weak.

  • I doubt that 18mths could be enforceable. Step up anyone who would ever work for a firm that tried to impose that. Bad move FFW.

  • How very sad all round. Eduardo is a massive figure in this niche but growing area. The FFW Members Agreement has long been a fascination to most lawyers.

  • Did Abell serve out 18 months before joining Bird & Bird then? Or is it the case that compared to Ustaran - an undoubted star - Abell had no substantive following?

But what planet is FFW on? 18 months in this day and age!

  • Just imagine how damaging it could be to hold a senior equity partner to 18 months in the office. He's hardly going to be straining every sinew and being positive about all aspects of the firm, is he? And how can this be 'usual'? How often have senior equity partners abandoned FFW?

  • "Oh yes, it's all very amicable, he LIKES being chained to his desk for a year and a half after he has decided to leave the firm."

This sends a terrible message to the market about what it's like to work for FFW. Totally counter-productive.

  • Abell - letters with Herbert Smith header got him out early. That is what it takes.

FFW - awful firm. Headhunters all over them are putting in loads of rubbish partners and taking out the good ones.

  • And Abell got away with taking a team. Way to go.
