Manchester sets 24a and 28 St John Street will merge in October to create Manchester's largest chambers, with a combined turnover pushing £10m
Last week, the two sets voted overwhelmingly in favour of the merger, after more than five months of negotiations. It is understood that only one tenant of 28 St John Street voted against the merger. Negotiations to add niche commercial set Merchant Chambers to the new 83-tenant set broke down. In a prepared statement, Michael Redfern QC, head of 28 St John Street, said: "Our purpose is to provide a top quality service across all practice areas, with a depth of experience not previously available. We hope to improve our service to existing clients and attract work in new areas from additional solicitors and referral agencies." Head of 24a St John Street John McNeill said: "We believe the future is in larger sets and we're delighted to be part of the team that is now leading the way in Manchester." Despite taking five months to finalise the merger - which will offer specialist groups in the fields of crime, civil, employment and family - the two sides have yet to agree on a name for the new set.
