  • Overview

20 Essex Street is a leading full-service commercial set with a strong international focus and chambers in London and Singapore. Comprised of 22 silks and 34 juniors, the set is led by head of chambers Iain Milligan QC. Daniel Clark is the chambers’ manager and the senior clerks are Neil Palmer, Brian Lee and Mathew Kesbey.

Iain Milligan QC specialises in banking, financial services and litigation aspects of commercial law. With so much of the work drawn to the chambers by his reputation, 20 Essex Street strengthened its banking and civil fraud team in 2013 with four new members. Stephen Atherton QC joins an already strong banking practice, which features leading barristers Duncan Matthews QC, Andrew Baker QC and one of the set’s rising stars, Charles Kimmins QC.

20 Essex Court saw one of its members taking silk in 2013: Michael Collett QC, who enjoys a thriving practice in commercial law. In EU and competition law the set has one of the leading silks in the field leading its practice. Stephen Morris QC is one of the few barristers at chambers who focuses on a narrow area of law with a formidable reputation to support his practice in European and UK competition law, and other aspects of European Union and commercial law.

20 Essex Street lost one of its leading silks when Stephen Males QC was appointed as a High Court judge. Sir Bernard Rix is returning to chambers from the Court of Appeal to pursue a career as an international arbitrator.

Guy Morpuss QC and barrister Patricia Edwards were involved in the Union Cycliste International Independent Inquiry involving doping. They acted as Counsel to the Commission in relation to the UCI’s Independent Inquiry handling of the Lance Armstrong affair.
