11 KBW

Bar top 30 position: 28

  • Overview

Made up of 60 barristers, including 18 QCs, 11 KBW is a leading set in public, commercial and employment law. Founding member James Goudie QC is head of chambers and chief executive officer David Stead was appointed in 2012.

Nigel Giffin QC leads the public law practice and is active in employment and commercial cases. James Goudie QC, who has been with the set since 1981, is equally prominent in public law and a leading silk in commercial and local government law. The public practice also boasts Jason Coppel QC, the sets’ only junior to take silk in 2013. He specialises in EU and human rights law.

John Cavanagh QC and Christopher Jeans QC, along with senior juniors Jane McCafferty and Richard Leiper, are prominent members in the set’s heavyweight employment practice. A member of the practice was involved in a major case in 2013 that upheld an employee’s right to wear a religious symbol visibly at work. It was one of four cases of religious freedom heard at the same time, but the only case to be successful.

In addition, Paul Nicholls QC successfully represented the government in its defence of the Department of Work and Pensions’ work-for-your-benefit scheme, which required the performance of unpaid work as a prerequisite for claimants’ benefits.
