Martineau posted a flat turnover on 2009-10’s figure of £20m. The Birmingham-based firm saw growth in its corporate and property teams despite poor market conditions, with the former winning new clients in the funds sector, while property was boosted by education sector wins.
Headcount fell slightly, with 16 equity partners compared with 20 last year and a number of redundancies. Martineau did make several lateral hires last year, including that of Clarke Willmott real estate partner Kathy Toon.
Martineau operates a merit-based remuneration system with a remuneration committee comprising managing partner William Barker, senior partner Andrew Whitehead and two elected members. The firm is managed via a two-tier system on which Barker, the group heads of departments and the directors from the support side sit on the operation board. Barker also sits on the executive board with Whitehead, two elected members and the finance director.
The firm is currently looking to ramp up in London via a merger with Sprecher Grier Halberstam.
